Informed Teen Reporters

SHHH...The Children are TALKING!!
“Words are the most powerful weapons, it may take a letter for someone to listen or an entire word to change their lives” – Sarah McGaughey, 16 yrs, IT Reporter
The Informed Teen (IT) Reporters are a group of children between ages 12 and 17 who have a common goal: to make a difference in Belize. The IT reporters work along with the NCFC in producing television news features that highlight the major issues affecting children in Belize. These features are incorporated into the live news broadcast on the local television station Channel 5.
The IT reporters meet on Saturday afternoons to discuss the issues that need to be addressed. During this process they select topics to be researched; arrange interviews and piece together all necessary information for their final script for the features. The IT reporters, through the assistance of Channel 5, film and record the news feature.
The concept of the Informed Teen Reporters was born in 2006 by the program staff of NCFC. It is an outlet for children to participate and inform their peers and adults about how children are affected by various issues and the rights provided to them under the CRC. The group was selected through open calls and interviews and formalized by the end of that year. Since that time, the IT reporters have participated in a weeklong media training and completed two news features. These were reporting on Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children and The Dangers of the Internet.
