A World Fit for Children

In May 2002, at the United Nations General Assembly Special Session on Children, Belize joined the international communitty in pledging support for the new global Plan of Action entitled "A world fit for children."

Some of the major themes in this plan are the eradication of poverty, universal primary education, promotion of gender equality, the reduction of child mortality, reversing the spread of HIV/AIDS and ensuring environmental sustainability. Millenium Development Goals (MDG)

At the United Nations Millenium Summit in 2000 189 world leaders made a historic promise to end poverty by 2015. These leaders signed unto the Millenium Declaration and agreed to meet the Millenium Develpment Goals (MDGs). The MDGs are an eight-point road map with measurable targets and clear deadlines for improving the lives of the world's poorest people. The Education for All Goals (EFA)

The Education for All Movement is a global commitment to provide quality basic education for all children, youths and adults. The movement was launched at the World Conference on Education for All in 1990 when representatives of the international community agreed to universalize primary education and massively reduce illiteracy by the end of the decade. The Beijing Rules

The Beijing Rules, adopted by the UN in 1985, provide guidance to States in the protection of children's rights and respect for their needs in the development of separate and specialized systems of juvenile justice. The Beijing Rules were the first international legal instruments to comprehensively detail norms for the administration of juvenile justice with a child's rights and development-oriented approach.
