Our children’s safety needs to be a priority

“Championing the rights, welfare and development of Belizean families and children”

Belize City – June 28, 2019

Statistics show that in recent months the number of injuries and deaths because of accidents involving motorcycles have increased.  In several cases, the driver of the motorcycle was not adhering to safety rules.

We applaud the Belize Police Department for engaging in operations to crack down on these traffic infractions that put our children at risk daily.  Article three of the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) reminds us that adults should do what is best for children; as when they make decisions, children are impacted.  Having a child on a motorcycle without the proper gear or having too many children on a motorcycle, exposes them to risks. Our children deserve to be raised in a safe environment, where their wellbeing is foremost in the mind of adults. Article nineteen of the CRC says a child has the right to be protected from harm. We all need to work together to ensure that we are doing what is in the best interest of our children.
